A Weekend Itinerary for Samaná: Beaches, Waterfalls, and Local Eats

samana

If you only have a weekend to explore the Dominican Republic beyond the big cities or resorts, Samaná is one of the best regions to visit. It’s a place where winding roads lead to white-sand beaches, lush waterfalls, and small fishing towns full of personality. And with a rental car, it’s all within reach. Here’s a simple 2–3 day itinerary for exploring Samaná at your own pace—no tour bus required.

🚗 Why Drive in Samaná?

Public transport in this region is limited, and many of the best spots are scattered along the coast or tucked into the mountains. Renting a car gives you the freedom to see more, stop when you want, and explore hidden gems most tourists miss. At Prestige Car Rentals, we’ll make sure you have the right vehicle for both paved highways and bumpy coastal roads.

Day 1: Arrive in Las Terrenas & Hit the Beach

Morning: Drive to Las Terrenas
From Santo Domingo, it’s about a 2-hour drive to Las Terrenas on well-maintained highways. You’ll pass through rolling hills and get stunning ocean views as you descend into town. Stop at scenic lookouts along the way if you’re not in a rush.

Afternoon: Playa Bonita & Lunch by the Water
After checking in, head straight to Playa Bonita. It’s one of the calmest and most scenic beaches in the area—perfect for swimming or grabbing lunch at one of the beachside restaurants. Try fresh grilled fish, rice, and tostones with a cold Presidente.

Evening: Walk the Town & Dinner in Las Terrenas
Spend the evening walking through Las Terrenas. The town has a laid-back vibe with a mix of local shops, small markets, and beachfront bars. For dinner, grab a table at El Lugar o La Terrasse—both offer a blend of Dominican and European flavors.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Nature & Secluded Beaches

Morning: Visit El Salto del Limón
After breakfast, drive about 30 minutes inland to El Salto del Limón, one of the region’s most popular waterfalls. You can hike in or take a guided horseback tour through the forest. Bring water shoes if you want to take a dip beneath the falls.

Midday: Lunch in El Limón Town
On the way back, stop in the small town of El Limón for a casual lunch. Most local restaurants serve Dominican classics—stewed chicken, rice and beans, and fresh juice.

Afternoon: Playa Cosón
Spend the late afternoon at Playa Cosón, a longer, wilder beach just outside Las Terrenas. It’s less built up than Playa Bonita and often feels more private. Bring a towel, a speaker, and snacks—you won’t want to leave.

Evening: Sunset Drive & Dinner by the Beach
Take a short coastal drive before sunset. The light over the mountains and sea is worth it. End the day with dinner at Mosquito Boutique Hotel o Atlantis—both have great views and solid menus.

Optional Day 3: Santa Bárbara de Samaná & Cayo Levantado

If you’re staying an extra day, head to the opposite side of the peninsula for something different.

Morning: Drive to Santa Bárbara de Samaná
It’s about 1.5–2 hours from Las Terrenas. The road is scenic, winding along the coastline with views of Samaná Bay. Park in town and grab breakfast or coffee.

Midday: Boat to Cayo Levantado (Bacardí Island)
From the marina, take a boat to Cayo Levantado, a small island with a beautiful beach and crystal-clear water. It’s a popular spot, but with good reason. You can swim, snorkel, and enjoy lunch right on the sand.

Afternoon: Return Drive with Stops
On your way back to Las Terrenas or Santo Domingo, stop at Mirador de Samaná, a lookout with panoramic views of the bay. If you have time, detour to Playa El Valle, one of the most scenic and less-visited beaches in the region.
